2 injured in stabbing at gurdwara in Canada's Edmonton, attacker arrested

Friday, August 21, 2026 - Two men were injured in a stabbing at the Nanaksar Gurdwara in Edmonton, Canada, early Friday morning, with police arresting a 27-year-old suspect at the scene.

The victims, aged 75 and 51, suffered non-life-threatening injuries and were taken to hospital in stable condition.

Police said the suspect entered the gurdwara and attempted to reach the prayer area before being confronted by people inside.

Witnesses intervened and restrained him until officers arrived. Authorities said the man had a significant history of violent offences and had been released from a federal prison in Alberta just one day before the attack.

The motive remains under investigation, with Edmonton police involving their hate-crimes unit as they determine whether the attack was motivated by ideology or hate.

The incident has shaken the local Sikh community and renewed concerns about safety at places of worship, while investigators continue gathering evidence and determining charges.
