Friday, August 14, 2026 -A 43-year-old New York woman has pleaded guilty to taking part in a human-smuggling conspiracy that brought migrants, primarily from India, into the United States through the northern border.
Stacey Taylor, of Plattsburgh, was arrested after U.S. Border Patrol stopped her vehicle near Churubusco, New York, on January 20, 2025, and found four men inside—three Indian nationals and one Canadian. Authorities said the men had crossed the U.S.-Canada border on foot through a wooded area in freezing conditions before Taylor picked them up.
According to court documents, Taylor received the migrants' location and pickup instructions and admitted that she expected to be paid for transporting them farther into the United States.
Investigators later found messages on her phone indicating involvement in other smuggling operations. Authorities also linked her to suspected smuggling activity in August and September 2025, showing that the January incident was not treated as an isolated event.
Taylor pleaded guilty to conspiracy to engage in alien smuggling and four counts of smuggling for profit. She faces a statutory minimum sentence of five years in prison and is scheduled to be sentenced on December 3, 2026.
The case comes as U.S. authorities intensify efforts to dismantle organized smuggling networks operating along the U.S.-Canada border, putting renewed focus on the people who arrange crossings, provide transportation and profit from vulnerable migrants.
