Two men bailed after being arrested on suspicion of manslaughter of 22-year-old soldier

Saturday, August 22, 2026 - Two men have been released on bail after being arrested on suspicion of manslaughter in connection with the death of 22-year-old soldier Liam Potts.

Potts, who served with the Coldstream Guards, was found dead in the River Tyne near Wylam Bridge on August 18, three days after he disappeared following a night out.

The two suspects, aged 22 and 23, were initially arrested and released on bail before being detained again as detectives continued investigating the circumstances surrounding Potts' death.

Police are examining events around his disappearance, including reports of a disturbance and a vehicle-pedestrian collision near Wylam Bridge, although investigators have stressed that there is no suggestion Potts was struck by the vehicle.

The case remains under active investigation as officers work to establish exactly what happened during the soldier's final hours. Specialist police teams searched the River Tyne before locating Potts, while his family and friends were left waiting for answers.

Detectives have urged anyone with information about his movements or the events leading up to his death to come forward as the investigation continues.
