Friday, September 24, 2026 - A reported 28% of Israeli police officers have resigned since Itamar Ben-Gvir became national security minister in December 2022, according to figures reported by Haaretz and cited by Anadolu Agency.
The figures were presented during closed-door discussions as the police face an ongoing manpower shortage.
The staffing pressure remains significant despite increased recruitment during Ben-Gvir’s tenure.
According to the report, more than a quarter of new recruits were assigned to the Border Police or the National Guard, while Israel’s police stations and traffic division still face a shortage of about 2,000 officers.
The figures put renewed focus on whether recruitment is keeping pace with departures and where newly recruited personnel are being deployed.
With thousands of positions still unfilled, the manpower gap is becoming an immediate operational issue for Israel’s police force and could shape ongoing discussions over staffing, recruitment standards and the structure of national security forces.
