Sunday, September 27, 2026 - Four American tourists are among six people who have died after a powerful explosion caused a two-storey building to collapse in Athens, Greece.
The blast struck the popular Plaka district near the Acropolis on Friday morning, sending debris and shattered glass across nearby streets and damaging surrounding buildings, shops and vehicles.
Emergency crews searched the rubble using rescue dogs, specialist cameras and sensors before recovering all six bodies.
The victims included the four American tourists staying in one apartment and an elderly British man and Greek woman who lived in another part of the building. Two women in a neighbouring building were also rescued and taken to hospital.
Authorities are now investigating what caused the deadly blast. Athens Mayor Haris Doukas said it was likely connected to gas infrastructure, while investigators examine reports that a gas smell had been noticed in the area.
The incident has drawn renewed attention to safety in the busy tourist district as officials continue assessing damage to surrounding properties.
