Monday, September 7, 2026 - Families in Gaza City have bid farewell to around 100 Palestinians whose remains were recovered from beneath the rubble of destroyed homes in the Zeitoun neighborhood.
The bodies were recovered by Civil Defense crews as part of an ongoing operation to retrieve people who have remained buried since the war began, bringing an end to more than two years of painful uncertainty for many families.
The remains were recovered from homes belonging to several families after rescue teams spent days digging through collapsed buildings with limited equipment.
Civil Defense crews are operating with only a small number of excavators and worn-out machinery, making recovery efforts slow and dangerous. Relatives gathered to identify loved ones, with photographs, candles and flowers marking a solemn farewell.
The recovery operation remains far from over. A second phase covers 147 destroyed homes across Gaza City and northern and central Gaza, where an estimated 1,072 bodies remain beneath the rubble.
The continued discovery of remains highlights the enormous scale of the destruction and the urgent need for equipment and resources to recover those still missing and provide families with long-awaited answers.
