Amazon wins global rights to stream Emmys in six-year deal

Wednesday, October 7, 2026 - Amazon’s Prime Video has secured exclusive global streaming rights to the Emmy Awards in a six-year agreement with the Television Academy, beginning with the 2027 ceremony.

The deal ends the long-running rotation among ABC, CBS, Fox and NBC and gives the Emmys a single global streaming home for the first time. The ceremony will be available live in more than 240 countries and territories.

The biggest immediate change is access. The Emmys will remain free to watch, meaning viewers will not need an Amazon Prime subscription to see the ceremony live.

The 2027 event will continue to take place in September, while Amazon plans to use its global platform to promote nominees and programming throughout the year, giving the awards a larger digital footprint and potentially connecting them with younger audiences.

The agreement highlights the accelerating shift of major entertainment events from traditional television to streaming platforms. The move comes as Emmy viewership has fallen sharply from its peak, with recent audiences hovering around 7 million, and as Amazon expands its investment in live programming.

For the Television Academy, the six-year partnership offers a chance to build the ceremony consistently with one global partner rather than restarting distribution plans every year.
