Three years on, Israel confronts unfinished legacy of October 7

Thursday, October 8, 2026 - Three years after the Hamas-led October 7, 2023 attack, Israel is still confronting the security failures, trauma and political consequences left behind. About 1,200 people were killed and 251 were taken hostage in the assault, which triggered the devastating Gaza war.

Today, many Israelis are marking the anniversary through memorials while communities near the Gaza border continue to rebuild and deal with deep psychological scars.

But the central questions surrounding October 7 remain unresolved. Families of victims and survivors are demanding a full independent investigation into how the attack was allowed to happen, while Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu continues to face criticism over the security failures and his government's handling of accountability.

The issue is becoming increasingly important as Israel approaches a national election later this month, putting security, leadership and responsibility at the center of public debate.

The legacy of October 7 now extends far beyond the day itself. Israel faces a society still shaped by fear and grief, while the war has left Gaza devastated and intensified international pressure on Israel.

With the anniversary bringing renewed scrutiny, the challenge ahead is no longer simply remembering what happened, but confronting the decisions and failures that followed—and determining what a more secure future should look like.
