VANCE says Iran must cut enrichment capacity for US deal

Thursday, October 8, 2026 - Vice President JD Vance says Iran must make a meaningful reduction in its uranium-enrichment capacity if Tehran wants an agreement with Washington to end the seven-month war.

Vance said the United States would require concrete changes to Iran's nuclear programme rather than promises, arguing that Iran has no civilian need to produce uranium enriched to 60%.

The demand comes as Washington and Tehran exchange proposals aimed at ending the conflict and reopening the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial route for global energy supplies.

Iran, however, maintains that its right to enrich uranium is a red line, while a senior Iranian official said Washington's demands currently conflict with Tehran's position.

The nuclear issue is now one of the biggest obstacles to a wider deal. Vance has indicated that Washington remains open to an agreement, but the United States wants measurable reductions in Iran's enrichment capability and greater guarantees against the development of a nuclear weapon.

With the conflict continuing and energy markets under pressure, the next round of negotiations could determine whether diplomacy gains momentum or tensions escalate further.
