Greece allocates €600,000 to support East Jerusalem hospitals

Monday, November 2, 2026 - Greece has committed €600,000 to support hospitals in East Jerusalem, in a move aimed at strengthening essential healthcare services for Palestinian patients amid growing pressure on the healthcare system.

The funding agreement was signed on November 2, 2026, by Greek Consul General in Jerusalem Dimitrios Angelosopoulos and Palestinian Minister of Finance and Planning Estephan Salameh. The contribution is intended to help hospitals maintain medical services and ensure patients continue receiving essential and specialized treatment despite financial challenges.

The funding will be channelled through the European Union's PEGASE Direct Financial Support programme, established by the European Commission and implemented through the EU office in Jerusalem. The East Jerusalem hospital network consists of six hospitals providing essential and specialized medical care to thousands of Palestinian patients.

According to the EU office in Palestine, contributions from the European Union, its member states and partners towards supporting medical referrals to these hospitals have exceeded €225 million since 2013. Greece's latest contribution also marks its first participation in the PEGASE funding mechanism.

The announcement comes at an important time for Palestinian healthcare providers, which continue to face financial pressures while serving patients requiring specialized medical attention. The Greek contribution is expected to strengthen the hospitals' ability to maintain operations and support access to essential treatment.

Beyond the immediate financial assistance, the agreement highlights the importance of international partnerships in sustaining healthcare infrastructure during periods of humanitarian and economic uncertainty. Continued funding and cooperation will remain crucial to ensuring that vulnerable patients receive the medical care they urgently need.
