Wednesday, September 30, 2026 - Matthew Perry’s long battle with addiction is back in the spotlight after his sister, Mia Perry Bowick, revealed that the late Friends star spent about $7 million trying to get sober.
Bowick makes the disclosure in Netflix’s upcoming three-part documentary, The One About Matthew Perry, describing the enormous effort her brother made to overcome addiction. Perry had also previously discussed spending more than $7 million on recovery in his 2022 memoir.
The new documentary goes beyond Perry’s public image as Chandler Bing, using interviews with his sister and longtime friends alongside previously unreleased photographs and videos from the Perry family archive.
Bowick says her brother struggled with a deep sense of emptiness and emphasizes that his repeated attempts at recovery reflected how seriously he took his illness. The series also revisits Perry’s own reflections on fame, addiction and the realization that professional success could not resolve his personal struggles.
The One About Matthew Perry is scheduled to premiere globally on Netflix on October 27, 2026, just one day before the third anniversary of Perry’s death. The release is already drawing renewed attention to the actor’s private battle and the people who knew him beyond Hollywood.
With his sister speaking publicly for the first time since his death, the documentary is set to offer viewers a more personal look at the man behind one of television’s most recognizable characters.
